About Corniche

A Harmonious Family Sanctuary

Corniche offers a unique solution for family living in a tranquil setting. Nestled in Braine-l’Alleud, this residential house emphasizes the balance between privacy and shared space. The design reflects the owners’ desire for intimacy, allowing family members to coexist harmoniously.

Integration with Nature

Open Architects prioritized the surrounding environment in the design. By positioning the house on the former tennis court, the project minimizes its ecological footprint. This approach preserves the natural character of the area, incorporating existing trees and landscaping into the living experience.

Innovative Design Features

The volumetric design consists of a flat-roofed day volume atop a supportive plinth. This structure creates a series of terraces that invite sunlight, enhancing outdoor living. Clad in beige stone, the plinth’s tapered bond integrates the home with the terrain, visually reducing its presence from public view.

A Controlled Outdoor Environment

At the heart of Corniche lies a carefully designed outdoor space, featuring a swimming pool that complements the residence. The U-shaped plinth follows the natural contours of the slope, fostering privacy and intimacy. Retaining walls further shield the interior from public exposure, allowing family activities to unfold in a secluded atmosphere.

Light and Landscape

With large trees surrounding the house, Corniche benefits from natural light filtering through the foliage. Glazed frames and semi-reflective matt glazing enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The roof’s horizontal fascia appears to float, creating a striking visual against the backdrop of nature.

In summary, Corniche is a thoughtfully designed family haven that embraces the beauty of its natural surroundings. By marrying modern architecture with a serene environment, Open Architects have crafted a home where family connections flourish amidst privacy and tranquility.
