About Turtle Bay Hua Hin Eco Luxe
Eco-Luxury Meets Local Craftsmanship
Set in the lush surroundings of Hua-Hin, Thailand, Turtle Bay Hua Hin Eco Luxe stands as a testament to sustainable architectural design, masterfully brought to life by Dersyn Studio in 2021. Spanning 1.7 Rai (approximately 0.66 acres), this wellness and spa center not only caters to the eco-conscious traveler but also integrates the cultural heritage of its location by preserving the natural environment and promoting local craftsmanship.
Design Inspired by Nature
The design of Turtle Bay draws significant inspiration from its proximity to notable natural landmarks like Khao Tao Reservoir. The architects used the imagery of a turtle, integral to the local lore (Khao meaning mountain and Tao meaning turtle in Thai), shaping the structure’s roofing to mimic a turtle’s shell. They preserved the existing large lotus pond to maintain the site’s original feel and ensured that the presence of visual cues like wild peacocks were undisturbed, reflecting a deep respect for the existing ecosystem.
Innovative Use of Local Materials
Material selection was pivotal, with an emphasis on harmony with nature and ease of local sourcing. The main roofing material, shingle, chosen for its natural stone-like appearance, complements the turtle shell design concept, while local bamboo serves as both roofing and wall material, celebrated for its flexibility and sustainable qualities. Local artisans skillfully used Poon-Tum, a regional material known for its cooling properties and sustainability, adding a layer of traditional architectural practice to the project.
Sustainable Technologies and Construction Techniques
Turtle Bay Hua Hin Eco Luxe incorporates cutting-edge sustainable technologies like solar cells for electricity, which powers lighting systems without relying on non-renewable sources. Construction techniques were adapted to use minimal heavy machinery, relying instead on the expertise of local artisans. The project not only stands as a structure but as a movement towards sustainable, community-involved construction.
Through careful planning and an innovative design approach, Turtle Bay provides a serene and environmentally friendly destination for visitors. The project’s commitment to preserving its natural and cultural environment makes it a pioneer in sustainable tourism in Thailand.
